Angie Bailey’s 2013 G1 Middle Park S. hero Astaire (Ire) (Intense Focus–Runway Dancer {GB}, by Dansili {GB}), was put down Sunday after suffering a bout of colic, according to a tweet by trainer Kevin Ryan. Bred by John O’Connor in Ireland, the 4-year-old also landed the G2 Gimcrack S. as a juvenile and added the G3 Abernant S. this April. A close third to American invader Undrafted (Purim) in the G1 Diamond Jubilee S. at Royal Ascot June 20, the 4-year-old was down the field in his latest start when 11th in the G1 Darley July Cup July 11.
Confirming the news on Twitter, Ryan said, “Sadly Astaire passed away on Sunday due to colic. He was tough and classy and will be sorely missed. Thank you to all who helped him.”
The Irish-bred earned $596,469 with a record of 17-5-2-1. Astaire’s dam is a half to fellow G2 Gimcrack S. winner Bannister (GB) (Inchinor {GB}).
